7 Songs You Sing Written by Sevyn Streeter

Many may know her as Chris Brown’s protégé, or the girl who’s singing in the background on some of his song, but Amber Denise Streeter has been making her mark in music for a while now. Long before she became the singer we know her as, she’s been putting her work in within the music industry. Sevyn transitioned from singer to songwriter, and now she’s one of the go-to songwriters that every R&B artist needs a song from before releasing an album. With just a few but impactful writing credits under her belt, Sevyn has proven that she’s mean when it comes to pen and paper.

Here are 7 superb songs written by Sevyn herself.

1. Chris Brown- Yeah 3X: When it came time for Chris Breezy to release his fourth album “A.M.E.” he called on his protégé to help him out with the leading single for the album. The up-tempo dance-pop song has Brown and fellow friend Kevin McCall, also listed with the song credit, but we know Streeter had her hands in this. Critics praised the euro-dance track for its production and lyrics.
2. Brandy- Slower: This sexy and sultry track was featured on Brandy’s 2012 “Two Eleven” album. Although the albums liner notes has Chris Brown credited as the songs writer. It was Sevyn who actually wrote the tune for Brandy. The song isn’t even a full three minutes long, but it eloquently tells the tale of a lady telling her man to go nice and slow while making love. The song refers to the lover as “Speed Racer.”

3. Fantasia– End of Me: One thing Sevyn does like to write about is sex. On this song for Fantasia’s fourth album “Side Effects of You,” which samples Gladys Knight’s “License to Kill.” The hard-hitting track talks about the magnitude in which she’ll go to because the loving making is so good.

4. Ariana Grande- The Way featuring Mac Miller: When many first heard this song they thought Mariah Carey had a new song out. Produced by Harmony Samuels and written by Streeter (just as the previous song.) You’re able to hear that Carey is one of Amber’s influences. The up-tempo track embodies Mariah’s sound and style, which made her the bonafide star she is. “The Way” instantly charted debuting in the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. The song samples Russell’s 1979 “A Lillte Bit of Love,” which the late rapper Big Pun also sampled on his 1998 hit “Still Not a Player.”

5. Alicia Keys- New Day: Alicia is known for her songwriting skills, but she reached out to Streeter as well for her 2012 “Girl On Fire” album. “New Day” was the single to get people talking of Keys’ return. The song also has another version by rapper 50 Cent that has Alicia on the hook and features Dr. Dre. The up-tempo feel good track is a guaranteed way to start your day off right.  The tune “Limitedless” from that album was also penned by Sevyn.

6. Chris Brown- Fine China: After the man who was partly responsible for her latter success returned to music after his many woes. She was there to lend her talents once again. “Fine China” is infectious with catchy lyrics, and has a heavy dose of Michael Jackson’s influence on it. The song marked a new era for Chris would serve as the leading single for Brown’s “X” album.

7. Tamar Braxton- All The Way Home: Probably the most standout track off Tamar Braxton’s acclaimed “Love and War” album, is all due to Sevyn Streeter again. The relatable song talks about one racing back home to their lover after an explosive argument. The tune has great build up and rich lyrics that can’t be ignored, and Tamar’s vocal performance on the song makes it all the way better.

Kelly Rowland featuring Wiz Khalfia- Gone: If you have Kelly Rowland’s “Talk A Good Game” album than you’re very familiar with this song. No doubt a standout song off the album that samples Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi.” It’s the perfect breakup anthem for girls to sing along too. It should have been a single for Rowland, but once again her team dropped the ball.
