Teyana Taylor has been busy since the debut of Kanye West‘s ‘Fade‘ music video at the VMA’s in August. The singer found time to grace the October issue of Paper Magazine. In the cover story Teyana Taylor Can Have It All she talks about the ‘Fade’ video, which now has racked up 26 million views, her new album, her daughter and more. Oh yeah, peep the full spread of photos.
Interview highlights:
On the ‘Fade’ video:
“It was a do-or-die moment where I was like, ‘I’m going to dance my fucking heart out,’ I honestly don’t feel like ‘Fade’ would have had the same effect had I just been 21, hot body, single,It was more than just dancing in a sports bra and a thong.”
On being nervous walking in Kanye’s fashion show in front of Anna Wintour:
“I was nervous as hell, I saw the posture, I saw the bangs, I saw the bob and I saw the shades, and I said, ‘Anna’s here,’ that’s when my nervousness really turned up. I love Anna. I’m obsessed with her. So, to know she was there, that she knows who I am…”
Drawbacks on starting her career as a teenager:
“I never had the time to fail, to fall and get back up and try again. People would get up on me, like, ‘You’ve been doing it for seven years now, you might as well give up.’ All you can do is keep shining. You can’t say something and think my legs are going to stop, my voice is going to stop, my hunger is going to stop. I’ll be hurt for five minutes, but I’m going to keep going hard.”
On her new album:
“I love that ’90s R&B, baby-making music. That’s where I plan to stay. I want to be relatable. Hit every aspect of what we go through as women.”
On her daughter with NBA player Iman Shumpert:
“She’s been our good luck charm. She’s just been everything. From the moment I got pregnant with her to the day she was born, it’s been all positives, all greatness, all iconic. She’s a damn baby mogul. Junie’s so cool, Anna Wintour might see me and be like, ‘Where’s Junie?'”
